“A new coalition of Germantown gardens has emerged, with the Hansberry Garden and Nature Center (HGNC) bringing together local food growers to promote food access and sharing.”
— Pryce Jamison, Germantown Info Hub
Germantown Info Hub, a hyperlocal news resource that focuses on news of import to our immediate community, recently featured Hansberry Garden and partner organizations in a story titled “Germantown gardens unite to share fresh produce with neighbors.“
The story reported on an effort by Hansberry Garden & Nature Center, along with several other local community gardens, to join forces to operate a free produce stand at Germantown Market Square on Germantown Ave. on Aug. 30. Gardeners from Fernhill Food Forest, G.R.E.A.T. Cooperative Farm, the Kelly Green Project, the Penn-Green Garden, the Pulaski-Zeralda Garden, and the Nicholson Church Lane Garden all contributed to the effort.
Supported by Germantown United Community Development Corporations’s community greening plan and donations of produce and facilities from Northwest Mutual Aid Collective, Weavers Way Coop, Germantown Kitchen Garden, and Taproot Farm, the gardeners offered a great variety of fresh produce, much of which was grown from plant starts or seeds distributed by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s community-gardening program.
The effort on Aug. 30 was a successful pilot, and the group plans another free produce stand on Sunday, Oct. 11. We hope to offer them on a more regular basis in 2027.
